Mercdes-Benz E-Class Estate Targeted With PHEV Powertrain

Posted on

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has a new generation on the horizon. As well as the four-door sedan, a wagon variant is also on the way. While we have previous spy shots of the long-top model, the car in this gallery is our first look at the plug-in hybrid model from the estate.

Aesthetically, the wagon version of the PHEV looks almost identical to the pure combustion powered variant. The only major change to be seen here is the door covering the charger on the driver’s side rear fender.

The horizontal slats on the grille tell us this is the standard Mercedes-Benz model, not the AMG trim. Unfortunately, the camouflage hides most of the design details. There’s a glimpse of the headlights, which have a strip of streetlights above them.

Mercedes is trying to hide it, but the new E-Class seems to have an interesting looking profile. There is a creased passage along the lower door. This element bends upward at the rear to accent the rear fender. We can’t see for sure, but the black roof on this car looks like a panoramic roof.

The E-Class wagons obviously have a longer roof to create additional cargo space at the rear. This one has a panel under the hatchback glass to hide the shape of the production model. The rear lights appear to have an interesting shape with a curved section at the bottom. The rear bumper hides the exhaust pipe, but a spy shot shows the exposed outlet for the AMG model.

A quick glance inside the new E-Class reveals a digital instrument cluster and a portrait-oriented infotainment screen sitting sideways on the center console. The black exterior covers the various sensors, so expect this model to have state-of-the-art driver assistance technology.

E-Class buyers will have a variety of powertrains to choose from. That will include mild-hybrid and PHEV options. At the top of the range, there will be an E 63 with a plug-in 2.0-liter turbo developing 671 hp (500 kW).

We expect the new E-Class to debut in the first half of 2023. It’s unclear whether the sedan and wagon will premiere at the same time. Generally, Mercedes has gradually launched AMG variants after the mainstream models. Additionally, the CLE-Class will replace the C- and E-Class coupes and convertibles.
