BMW M8 With 800 HP Fails To Reach 186 MPH On The Autobahn

Posted on

The BMW M8 is one of the most capable production machines to have come from Munich. However, for some enthusiasts, the factory’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo does not quite have enough power with a stock 625 horsepower (460 kilowatts) and 553 pound-feet (750 Newton-meters) of torque. This is where an aftermarket engine remap comes in to help, bringing in more power and potentially increasing the grand tourer’s top speed.

Regardless of whether we are talking about the unmodified or tuned M8, the Autobahn is the natural habitat for a two-door performance vehicle. In the case of the video above, it has a soft top and a tuning package that gives a peak output of up to 800 hp (588 kW). But is that enough for the convertible to reach speeds of 186 miles per hour (300 kilometers per hour)? Let’s find out.

The 3:30 minute clip takes us to various sections of German highways, some of which have no speed limits. This is where the tuned M8 Convertible unleashes its full potential and plays into its exhaust symphony. Surprisingly, however, we never saw it surpass the 186 mph (300 kph) mark, but that’s by no means the case. can not beyond that speed.

In stock form the M8 has a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 kph) but this example tops out at 185 mph (298 kph) unpressurized. The reason why it doesn’t reach higher speeds may have something to do with the fact that the driver doesn’t want to push the vehicle to its limit. As you can see, at the end of the video, the road is clear and the car is happily accelerating after the stock car electronics restrictions. We don’t know dry figures for this particular М8, but we believe it could reach 192 mph (310 kph) or even more.

The M8 with its twin-turbocharged V8 remains one of the fastest and most powerful cars currently sold from the non-exotic automaker. With a little help from a tuning specialist, the car can easily be turned into an absolute rocket, and now we know the Autobahn is the M8’s favorite haunt.
