Honda will be giving the Sensing 360 and Sensing Elite advanced safety families a major technological upgrade in the coming years and will begin installing them as standard on an expanding model list. Ultimately, the Japanese manufacturer wants to have the Honda Sensing 360 standard on all its new vehicles in the United States by the end of the decade. Acura will be getting its own version of a driver assistance system called AcuraWatch.
The next generation of Sensing 360 will begin rolling out in China in 2024 with upgraded hardware and software to reduce the likelihood of accidents through accurate detection of abnormal conditions occurring in the driver and vehicle environment. This enhanced technology is part of Honda’s global strategy to achieve zero traffic fatalities involving motorcycles or the brand’s vehicles by the middle of this century. This plan is in line with Honda’s mission to become completely carbon neutral by 2050 – both in its products and corporate operations.
From the end of the decade, the automaker will accelerate the popularization of the Honda Sensing Elite, which is the flagship version of the company’s suite of driver assistance and safety features. New developments are also planned, including more advanced traffic jam self-driving systems, new and improved hands-off functions for highway driving, automatic parking and garage driving, and more.
Honda first introduced the Sensing suite of systems in 2014 with the 2015 CR-V, while Acura got a version of the technology with the 2015 Acura TLX. Since the first implementation of Honda Sensing and AcuraWatch, adoption of these systems has expanded dramatically across the two brands’ lineups. As a result, nearly seven million Honda and Acura vehicles in the United States have this technology.
Apart from adding new and improved features to Honda Sensing, the manufacturer also says AI is constantly gathering data and experiences, similar to how humans do. Thus, the system’s ability to recognize more complex scenarios and deal with new driving situations increases every day. The next generation Honda Sensing Elite will benefit from all the information gathered, although specific rollout plans for the flagship safety system have yet to be announced.
