The driverless parking system in the parking garage of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart has been in operation since 2019. To this end, the German marque is working with Bosch to use development vehicles without human supervision in the daily operation of the parking garage.
Now, the special license to operate the driverless parking system has been extended, allowing commercial operation with privately owned vehicles in the parking garage P6 at Stuttgart Airport.

The basis for the approval is a law that came into effect in Germany in July 2021, permitting driverless driving in accordance with SAE Level 4 for motor vehicles – implemented in close coordination with the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). All they have to do is reserve a parking space through the Mercedes me app in advance and drive to a pre-determined drop point. The system will then check whether the route to the parking lot is clear and all other technical requirements have been met. Once they do, the car owner can then leave the car.
The vehicle must be able to drive itself to the parking space through the use of the various Bosch sensors installed in the area. These sensors communicate with the vehicle directly, enabling fully automated maneuvers through the parking lot.
In the same way, if a driver wants to pick up their vehicle from a parking space, they can do so through the app. Upon request, the vehicle will self-drive to the designated pick-up point.
