Marco Polo’s Mercedes EQT Concept Shows The Future For The Electric Camper

Posted on

Mercedes-Benz introduced two Marco Polo concepts to turn the EQT electric van into a camper. One is a full conversion, and the other has a simple detachable module for people who just want to spend a little time away from home.

The silver van in the gallery has had an interior revamp to make it a camper. The rig uses the upcoming long-wheelbase EQT as a starting point and adds a pop-up roof panel. With this section extended, there is room for passengers to stand up in the vehicle. The bedroom measures 77.56 inches (1.97 meters) by 38.2 inches (0.97 meters) there, and zip-out windows provide views of nature.

The pop-up roof also has solar panels. There is a removable battery in the drawer that the occupants can use, instead of draining the battery running the motor, which would reduce the van’s range.

Underneath is a 78.74-inch (2 meters) by 45.28 inches (1.15 meters) rollaway mattress. The bench creates seating on one side even when the bed is unfolded. For privacy, the window darkens at the press of a button.

The kitchenette includes a sink, induction hob and box fridge. A removable gas camping stove is in the drawer if you prefer to prepare your food outside. The folding table is electrically adjustable in height.

The production version of this van will be available in the second half of 2023.

The blue EQT pictured is the short-wheelbase model and features the Marco Polo Module. There are two parts to it. A sleeping area comes as standard, and a kitchen unit is an additional option. The pieces attach to the fixing holes in the luggage compartment and can be removed.

The bed unit has a rollaway mattress measuring 78.74 inches (2 meters) by 45.28 inches (1.15 meters). When stored, the rear seats are fully usable. The package includes blackout covers for windows so residents can sleep in privacy.

The kitchen unit added a 3.17 gallon (12 liter) water tank, a 0.53 cubic foot (15 liter) refrigerator, and a gas camping stove. There are also two chairs and a table that can be installed inside or outside the van.

Mercedes will make the Marco Polo Module available “in the near future,” according to the company.

The EQT powertrain consists of an electric motor that produces 121 horsepower (90 kilowatts) and 181 pound-feet (245 Newton-meters) of torque. The van is equipped with a 45 kilowatt-hour battery pack. This model is launching soon in Europe with a starting price of around 49,000 euros ($51,595 at current exchange rates).
