The Mazda MX-5 Miata is one of the few convertible sports cars that are widely available and relatively affordable on the market. A new generation is now on the horizon. The hybrid powertrain could be one of the big changes keeping this model in line for another iteration.
Euro 7 emission regulations were Mazda’s main considerations when developing the new Miata.
“This should also be triggered by the adoption of new laws recently announced for stage seven in Europe,” said Yasuhiro Aoyama, Mazda director and senior executive officer. Wheel. “So we are still investigating the contents of stage seven, but it will affect our MX-5 at that time.”
Aoyama sees hybrids as a solution to meet stricter emission regulations.
“At that point, it will be electrification of sorts so we need to investigate the most appropriate strategy for the future MX-5 that will not betray the expectations of our fans,” he said.
Aoyama’s statement isn’t the first time we’ve heard of an electrified Miata. In 2021, a Mazda spokesperson confirmed to Motor1.com that the company intends to electrify the next generation Miata. “Mazda is seeking to electrify the MX-5 Miata in a bid to have all models feature electrification by 2030,” the source said.
Akira Tamatani, Mazda’s head of design, also discussed the future of the Miata. He ruled out using the new mild-hybrid inline-six in the sports car. “If you put in an engine like that and it’s not going to be an MX-5 anymore,” he said.
Tamatani points out the new Miata won’t be identical to the recent Vision Study Concept (gallery above). Mazda debuted a swoopy design in November. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether it envisions a future MX-5 or something else.
“That is a message. We have a passion for making that type of vehicle, that’s the message we want to convey. But will we make a production vehicle made of it? We haven’t decided yet,” said Tamatani.
In September 2022, spyshots captured Mazda testing a current-generation Miata with a camouflaged nose. If you look closely, the rear fender is wider than the existing model. Cabling also runs along this area. The vehicle is allegedly a test mule for the next generation of sports cars.
