Spy shots have revealed Mercedes is putting the finishing touches on the second-generation GT Coupe, but AMG isn’t done with the original model yet. Affalterbach’s most powerful homologous customer race car ever, the GT2 is here to complement the GT3 and GT4 models that have been around for years. The new arrival bridges the gap between the two existing track-only machines and caters to “gentleman drivers.”
The highlight of the AMG GT2 is undoubtedly its powertrain, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a flat crankshaft. This tells us the engine is related to the road-mounted Black Series. In race car specs, it’s been tuned to produce a healthy 707 horsepower (520 kilowatts). That’s slightly less than the road-legal supercar with its mammoth 730 hp (537 kW), though dyno tests show it actually makes more than 770 hp.

Set to go up against the upcoming Maserati MC20 GT2, Mercedes-AMG’s latest customer race car pushes 800 Newton meters (590 pound-feet) of torque. The beefy V8 works with a six-speed sequential racing transmission with an auto-adjustable locking differential and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.
Using carbon fiber for the driver’s safety cell and the 120-liter fuel tank and hood and other components have kept the weight to less than 1,400 kilograms (3,086 pounds), including air conditioning. The AMG GT2 uses 18-inch centerlock forged wheels with 325/660 fronts and 325/705-18 slicks and uses safety technology adapted from the GT3 and GT4.
The newly designed aerodynamic kit includes a rear wing that was engineered from the ground up. It has a goose neck mount and is adjustable depending on the circuit. AMG has developed the license plateless GT Coupe with front and rear double wishbone aluminum suspension, along with anti-roll bars and adjustable shock absorbers.
Before being sold in 2023, the race car will undergo testing in the following weeks. Further evaluation will be carried out next year in the GT2 European Series season. In addition to entering the race, AMG plans to hold an endurance test.
