General Motors rumors about a vehicle sub-brand are roiling once again. This time the focus is on the Cadillac Escalade and the Chevrolet Camaro – two long-running and well-known names under the GM umbrella.
If this all seems a bit familiar, yet another sub-brand rumor regarding the Chevrolet Corvette has recently surfaced. As the report Car and Driver is the latest source of gossip about the Escalade and Camaro, citing an anonymous individual with GMs aware of the plans. As for the nature of this plan, specific details about the vehicles were not disclosed. But the report does offer an overall picture of how the Escalade and Camaro sub-brands will look.
The Escalade appears to be a more ambitious project, consisting of a smaller three-row crossover and a minivan, the latter of which will be aimed at the Chinese market. A raised all-terrain sedan or wagon could also be in the works, which could be something like the Audi Allroad or the new Toyota Crown.
As for the Camaro, rumors of a crossover have resurfaced, offering two or four doors with extra ground clearance and all-wheel drive. A two-door four-seater coupe and convertible are reportedly in the mix, contradicting rumors that the traditional Camaro will be killed off after running the current generation. There’s also talk of a flagship Camaro performance model loosely based on the next-generation Chevrolet Corvette.
This all sounds pretty fantastic, but at least with the Camaro, it’s not uncharted territory. Rumors of the Camaro being converted into something other than a pure pony car have been swirling around the internet for a few years now. Of course, Ford has taken this step with the Mustang Mach-E, offering an all-electric crossover alongside the traditional Mustang. And strong sales numbers for Mach-E confirm that it is a very successful move for Ford. You can bet Chevrolet is well aware of this.
Still, we’re dealing with pure rumors at this point. Representatives for Cadillac and Chevrolet declined our requests for comment on the story. If this all happens, it will likely happen in the next few years.
