Stellantis Recalls 1.23M Ram Pickup Due To Potential Tailgate Issues

Posted on

A massive recall of 1.23 million Ram trucks is underway from Stellantis. The problem involves the back door possibly not locking properly, and because of that, it could open. The potential issue affects model years 2019 through 2022, and can occur on both light and heavy pickups. An estimated 120,759 trucks in Canada, 26,613 in Mexico and 27,404 in other markets were also affected.

Specifically, the problem lies with the locking components on the gate. According to Stellantis, the striker plates on some trucks may not align properly. This can prevent the back door from closing completely, possibly causing it to fall out unexpectedly. If the unsecured item is in the bed of the truck when this happens, it could end up on the street or worse yet, a recall is issued. Fortunately, it seems that the worst-case scenario is yet to come – Stellantis is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to this recall.

The recall applies to Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups going back to 2019, but not all. Trucks with multifunction trick tailgates, and trucks with tailgate sensors are not affected by this alignment issue.

Automakers are aware of the problem when they perform regular reviews of customer service records. Repair involves inspecting the latch components, and realigning if necessary. Stellantis will begin notifying affected customers in January 2023 when inspection and realignment services are available.

For some Ram trims, this is the second recall in less than a month. In mid-November, nearly a quarter of a million 2500 and 3500 HD trucks were recalled due to the potential fire risk. Pickups running a 6.7 liter Cummins Turbo Diesel engine and 68RFE transmission can overheat and overstress the transmission, causing fluid to leak from the dipstick tube. The recall covers trucks returning to the 2020 model year. Stellantis did not have the drug available at the time the recall was issued.
