BMW 5 Series Touring Spy Shot Showcases the i5 Electric Variant

The next-gen BMW 5 Series will debut sometime in 2023. This will be our first look at the redesigned model that will eventually spawn the revamped M5 and more. The automaker has been developing a new model for some time, which our spy photographers have caught on numerous occasions. The latest photos capture the wagon variant powered by BMW electricity.

This isn’t the first time our shooters have seen the long-roofed 5 Series. A photo of the trim wagon surfaced a few days ago, but it’s not moving. The only indication of its powertrain is an “Electrified Vehicle” sticker on the rear door bumper, potentially hiding a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new photos show the model in motion with the same decals, but our photographer says it’s the all-electric i5 variant.

BMW seems to be giving the model an evolutionary design update, at least on the outside. The photos show off a car with a closed thin grille flanked by one-piece headlight units, which look like production polishers. The nose also appears to be slightly more angular than the previous model. There’s not much to see on the back, with camouflage covering the fascia. However, we can see the car’s production taillights popping out of the hood.

The 5 Series will get more substantial updates inside, with BMW fitting a curved dual-screen display. The car will receive a completely new cabin layout, with a revamped center console and instrument panel, bringing the latest technology to the model.

BMW hasn’t discussed the model’s powertrain lineup yet, but we do know the revamped 5 Series will use the automaker’s CLAR platform. This will allow the company to produce the 5 Series, which will be made by BMW in both sedan and wagon body styles, to use a wide range of powertrain options. We hope the high-powered M5 will return, perhaps as a hybrid, with BMW using the electric assist used in other variants. We’ll also be getting an electric i5.

BMW has yet to announce a debut date for the new 5 Series. It is expected to open the lid next year in sedan form. The 5 Series Touring wagon will likely debut after that, with the high-powered, electric M version arriving much later.
