Gigi Dall’Igna, general manager of Ducati Corse, does not rule out the possibility of Marc Marquez. But another Spanish rider is in the sights.
Ducati dominated the MotoGP season by winning not only the riders’ title with Pecco Bagnaia, but also the Triple Crown, with leadership in the Constructors’ and Teams’ World Championships. Gigi Dall’Igna and the top management of Borgo Panigale had already bet on the Piedmontese rider at the end of 2017, even before he became Moto2 champion in 2018. His talent was already demonstrated at the beginning of his career in Moto3, also reaching the podium with a decidedly less competitive bike and without ever complaining about its means.
A characteristic that impressed the general manager of Ducati Corse, who in turn did an impeccable job at a technical level, putting a highly competitive Desmosedici GP22 in his hands on the premier class grid. The next goal is to repeat himself, now the hardest part begins after the well-deserved moment of glory. The competition sharpens the knives and in 2023 heralds a battle against the Emilian team.
Ducati, hypothesis Marc Marquez and Izan Guevara
Many are expecting a return to the limelight for Marc Marquez who, after three complicated seasons, should return to his best physical condition. Ducati holds the Honda champion in high esteem: “He’s always scary, he’s proven to be someone who has grit, strength, a riding style that should scare you,” Gigi Dall’Igna told ‘Marca’. “Anyone who isn’t afraid of Marc Marquez is simply crazy.”
Respect more than fear, because if Pecco Bagnaia starts next season as he did in the second part of the 2022 championship, the others will have to fear the reigning champion. The arrival of Alex Marquez in Gresini could perhaps open the door to a future for Marc in red after 2024… “Never say never in life. We have a two-year contract with Pecco and our relationship has always been wonderful. Even in moments of mutual difficulty, we have been able to help each other and find a solution. That’s why I think it would be difficult, but… in life you never know”.
In Ducati’s sights there is rather a young Majorcan rider, Izan Guevara, born in 2004 and already Moto3 champion in his second year in the World Championship. Gigi Dall’Igna and the Emilian team are focusing above all on emerging youngsters and the Spaniard could join Pramac in the next few years. Thanks also to the new team manager Gino Borsoi… “We surround ourselves with people who know how to choose the riders”, concluded the engineer of Venetian origin. “And I think Gino is one of those.”
