For those of you who are less excited about SUV mania, we have good news. Manufacturers like BMW are still producing station wagons and it’s unlikely that this will change any time soon as the Bavarian automaker is currently working on its first electric estate to complement its revamped 5 Series family. What you see in the gallery below are new spy photos showing two prototypes of the upcoming i5 Touring.
The first 13 photos depict a test vehicle spotted on the streets of Munich in Germany, which looks like a hotter M60 variant. Those red brake calipers hint at a more powerful electric system lurking under the skin and as far as we can tell, there may be a dual-motor powertrain to match the M badge. It won’t be a full-flat M model, but a fast luxury electric wagon sounds sufficient. good for us.

As far as the exterior design is concerned, we have even more good news. BMW will likely take an evolutionary approach based on the current 5 Series family, which is one of the best-looking mainstream vehicles available. There are no massive lattices, no futuristic shapes – just a traditional long roof design in a distinctly Bavarian style.
The Touring i5 will be one of many overhauled members of the 5 Series family. Underlying everything is BMW’s CLAR architecture, which will allow the manufacturer to produce a wide variety of body styles with different powertrains on the same assembly line. Combustion-powered sedans and wagons are expected to come first, followed by their electric siblings. The M5 is also available with an electric powertrain and there may also be a more practical M5 Touring.
We’re starting to worry about BMW’s future seeing how the brand is orientated towards SUVs. Fortunately, with models like the new 5 Series, the marque is here to stay, offering stylish and modern family vehicles for everyone.
