Trademark filings can provide a clue as to what automakers are planning as companies want to protect their right to use the name before introducing it to the general public. On December 22, 2022, Nissan filed for the QX65 trademark, hinting at a new vehicle from Infiniti.
Nissan entered this trademark filing in classification for “vehicles; devices for locomotion by land, air or water,according to the US Patent and Trademark Office. The USPTO entered the application into its database on December 26.
It usually takes several months to file an application from initial submission to the USPTO granting the trademark. Don’t expect official confirmation of possible vehicles coming from Infiniti until this process is complete.
Motor1.com contacted the automaker for comment. “In accordance with our practice, we do not comment on speculation,” a spokesperson told us.
Looking at Infiniti’s existing lineup, there are hints of what might be coming. The brand currently offers the QX50 and QX55 crossovers, which are sleeker, coupe-like versions of the vehicles.
Going by this nomenclature, the QX65 could become a slimmer QX60 (gallery above).
For the 2023 model year, Infiniti updated the QX60 by adding a standard wireless phone charging pad. There are also new frameless mirrors and lower bumper accents in either gloss black or dark gray.
The second-generation QX60 rolls out for the 2022 model year. Under the hood, the 3.5-liter V6 produces 295 horsepower (220 kilowatts) and 270 pound-feet (366 Newton-meters) of torque. A nine-speed automatic directs power to a front or all-wheel drive layout.
Inside, the QX60 has three rows of seats. Infiniti offers high-end materials such as semi-aniline leather upholstery and open porous wood. This technology includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
For security, the QX60 offers a ProPilot Assist system with Navi-Link. The technologies include lane centering, lane departure intervention, adaptive cruise control and automatic slowdown for freeway curves.
A report from March 2022 points to Infiniti’s plans to introduce a two-row model that rides on the QX60 platform. It is possible that this model is related to the QX65’s trademark filing. The vehicle is thought to arrive before 2025.
