The number plate on any vehicle, whether it’s a two-wheeled vehicle, a car, a heavy vehicle, is essential because it allows you to trace the owner of the vehicle and is therefore mandatory.
This is used in particular by the police to carry out any checks. The license plate must remain immaculate, from the time of vehicle registration and never subjected to modifications.
Some anomalies inevitably attract the attention of the police patrols who at this point can do nothing but investigate and then proceed with consequences such as administrative or criminal penalties.
Because changing the license plate is a crime
Change the license plate, iminimally or totally means committing a fairly serious crime. This is what happened to a van that was circulating in the Morane area in Modena, where, following a police check, everything came out.
Not only had the license plate previously been changed by the owner with a Sharpie, but the vehicle had been impounded from years prior. During the check, the policemen also discovered that the driver of the vehicle was without a license because the document was his had been revoked by the prefecture the year.
The man was transporting waste oil without permits in an inappropriate vehicle. For the 54-year-old from Modena, a complaint was immediately filed for alteration of the license plate, driving the vehicle without a license, possession of instruments capable of offending, then illegal transport of hazardous waste on impounded vehicle.

The license plate, the small sword he was carrying on the vehicle, the tank, were immediately seized while the van was confiscated. But it doesn’t end there because the man also received a € 4000 fine that must pay as soon as possible.
This is what happened on Sunday 7 August 2022, with a patrol engaged in the evening shift who noticed the van simply because of the modified license plate with a black indelible marker.
The owner of the vehicle, that is, the man driving had changed both the numbers and the original letters of the license plate to hide the fact that the vehicle was actually seized.
He hadn’t realized that the license plate itself might give him away. Following the checks, the policemen realized that he was driving even without a license, which in itself is a serious crime. The discovery of the sword and the discovery of exhausted oils aggravated the situation.
