The next-gen Cadillac XT5 is right around the corner. However, the luxury crossover will only be sold in China, according to Mark Reuss, president of Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors.
During a GM Investor Day presentation held at the end of 2022, Reuss revealed some details about the automaker’s future product plans, explaining that the next-generation Cadillac XT5 will be sold in China, but will no longer be available in the North American market. It is expected to enter the market during the 2024 calendar year.
“This is only for China, because we are moving Cadillac in the United States to an all-electric brand,” Reuss said during the presentation. “The XT5 is still a very high-volume segment in China, and we will do so with a new interpretation of the design language, both inside and out.”
To that end, Cadillac has positioned the Lyriq as an electric replacement for the XT5, even though the EV has a nearly $20K higher starting price.
In addition, Reuss confirmed that the Cadillac GT4 will soon make its debut in the Asian country. Images of the subcompact ICE-powered crossover recently leaked, revealing that a new turbocharged 1.5L I4 engine will power the lower-end model, while the higher-end trims will feature a turbocharged 2.0L I4 engine (production code LSY).
There’s also an as yet unnamed small electric Cadillac crossover ready to launch in calendar year 2024. This EV will be smaller than the Cadillac Lyriq, and could bear any of the names the luxury marque has submitted to trademarks, such as Optiq, Symboliq, Lumistiq, Ascendiq or Vistiq.
As a reminder, the 2023 Cadillac XT5 didn’t bring much change when it entered production on June 10.th, 2022 at the Spring Hill factory in Tennessee. This luxury crossover uses the C1 platform and has a choice of two engine options. A turbocharged 2.0L engine (production code LSY) is standard on the Luxury (base) and Premium Luxury models, producing 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This model wears the 350T badge on the trunk lid. Meanwhile, the naturally-aspirated 3.6L V6 (production code LGX) is optional in the Premium Luxury trim and comes standard on the Sport model. The atmospheric six is rated for 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque. This model features the 400 badge on the back. Both engines pair with Cadillac’s nine-speed automatic transmission.
