Mercedes-Benz EQG EV Spied Wear Inventive Camo Pattern

Posted on

The Mercedes-Benz EQG debuted as a concept and then came as a driving prototype. This spy shot is our first chance to see him during cold weather development.

The development team covered the electric SUV in black and blue, which has the same color scheme as the cover on the prototype but has a different pattern. Instead of the earlier cheetah fur design, there is now something that looks like a mix of topographical maps and circuit boards. It’s a subtle way of communicating that this is an EV that can go off-road.

This EQG looks a lot like the prototype, which also means it looks a lot like the look of the existing G-Class. The arrangement includes an opening in the lower fascia and a grille with two stacked exposed blades. The circular headlight has three distinct parts.

The rear fender has a long oval-shaped hole. These openings are presumably to direct air to cool the brakes, but their location doesn’t appear to be ideal for that purpose.

The back of this EQG looks odd because there’s no spare wheel back there, something you’d expect to have on a G-Class. The piece is in the prototype. In concept, the circle-shaped space functions as a storage place for charging cables.

The EQG still uses a ladder frame chassis. Although not identical to those under the existing G-Class. Modifications were required to install the EQ battery and electric motor. Carbon-Kevlar underbody panels protect these components from damage off-road.

The EQG prototype packs four electric motors and four transfer cases. Individual power at every corner allows the vehicle to perform tank turns. Details about horsepower output and battery capacity are not yet available. The SUV reportedly weighs around 6,600 pounds.

The EQG is reported to go on sale in 2024. It’s too early to know pricing details. For context, the G 550 currently starts at $139,900 in the US. The AMG G 63 is $179,000.
