Alfa Romeo Tonale launched a year ago with a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine and a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the United States. At the time, sources close to the automaker said it would bring the starting price in the lofty $30,000 range. However, the decision was later made to drop the pure ICE version, leaving only the more expensive PHEV. Today, the Italian brand has finally revealed pricing details for its compact crossover.
The Math starts at $42,995 for the entry-level Sprint, followed by the mid-range Ti for $44,995 and the highest-range Veloce available from $47,495. All three prices exclude a $1,595 destination fee and up to $7,500 federal tax credit for those who plan to rent a CUV. Alfa Romeo says only the Ti and Veloce can be pre-ordered for now, with the less expensive Sprint to follow in the first quarter of this year.
As a refresher, the Tonale with PHEV setup combines a small 1.3-liter turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor for a total of 285 hp and around 350 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid stroke allows the all-wheel-drive crossover to reach 60 mph from a standstill in the estimated six seconds, too.
Thanks to the 15.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, it can go over 30 miles without a sip of gas. With a fully charged battery and full fuel tank, Alfa Romeo estimates the Tonale can travel 320 miles (515 kilometers) and produce 75 MPGe. It takes two and a half hours to charge the battery using a level 2 charger.
The mechanically related Dodge Hornet starts at $29,995 (no destination), but for the sake of accuracy we should point out that the lesser version is sold in the US without an electric powertrain. Pricing details for the Hornet R/T plug-in hybrid have not been disclosed.
