There is bad news for anyone in Japan planning to buy a Honda Civic Type R. Due to high demand and the erratic supply of parts, the company is temporarily not taking orders.
Honda made the announcement on its Japanese market page for the Civic Type R. Here’s a translation of the message:
We apologize for the temporary suspension of orders for customers considering the Civic Type R. Thank you for considering our vehicle. Since its launch, the Civic Type R has been well received by customers, and we have received a large number of orders. On the other hand, due to the impact of the spread of the new corona virus infection, the chronic semiconductor shortage, the unstable arrival of parts and logistical delays, it is difficult to forecast future production. To ensure delivery of the Civic Type R to all customers who have placed orders, we have temporarily stopped accepting orders. Regarding the resumption of orders, we will inform you again based on the future production situation. We sincerely apologize for causing great inconvenience to customers who are considering it. Thank you for your understanding.
The stoppage of orders does not affect the US. Motor1.com contacted Honda America for comment.
“The Japanese market is different because customers there order directly through Honda Motor or their dealers. In the US we allocate production to dealers, and they sell to consumers. Production of the Type R has been earmarked in the US from the start in limited numbers. , and it continues,” a spokesperson said.

When available, the Civic Type R in Japan has prices start at 4,997,300 yen ($38,896 at current exchange rates), which includes consumption tax.
In the US, it starts at $43,990 after a $1,095 destination fee. The Boost Blue Pearl, Championship White, and Sonic Gray Pearl colors add $455 to the price. A set of 19-inch forged wheels is available for $3,100, and they weigh 5.29 pounds less than the standard cut. The $5,350 R Performance package brings together forged wheels and a carbon fiber rear wing. For $950, the R Interior Driver package adds illuminated door sill trim, a leather-wrapped shift knob, and an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel.
The Civic Type R packs a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that produces 315 horsepower (235 kilowatts) and 310 pound-feet (420 Newton-meters) of torque. The only available gearbox is a six-speed manual.
Honda is also preparing two racing versions of the Civic Type R. The TCR variant with a more aggressive body than the road model will compete in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge later this year.
