The first vehicle to bear the Porsche name – the 356 Roadster – debuted on June 8, 1948. The car’s 75th birthday is just around the corner, and the automaker intends to celebrate with an unknown design study, teased today on its Porsche Newsroom page on Instagram.
The teaser video shows the mysterious Porsche under silk, sitting between the 356 hardtop and the first 356 Roadster. It also appears in the trailer, being towed by what looks like a Porsche Vision Renndienst concept van. The silhouette under the sheet is all P-car, with its fastback design and sloping front end. The concept looks like the size of an early 911, though there are some obvious modern design elements. The upper parts of the fenders have a crease at the top, a design study in the style of the Vision Spyder, and there is a clearly visible diffuser sticking out from under the rear bumper.
Beyond that, your guess is as good as ours on what Porsche’s stylists have come up with. Some commenters have speculated that the vehicle will sport an all-electric powertrain, and others hope the opposite is true. Many Porsche design studies in recent years have used internal combustion powertrains – the 904 Living Legend and its V2 motor come to mind – but with fully electric versions of the Macan and 718 on the way, it seems this new concept will follow suit.
Porsche hasn’t announced when it will unveil its new design either, but hopefully we won’t have to wait too long. After all, we’re not the patient type.
