The Genesis X Convertible Concept debuted at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show to envision a sleek, luxurious droptop for a premium brand. According to a new report, the brand intends to put it into production.
Luc Donckerwolke, the brand’s chief creative officer, allegedly made the announcement about the X Convertible going on sale at Genesis’ annual meeting. “When he said that at a dealer meeting — to say it in front of several hundred Genesis dealers — that was a pretty good sign,” said Peter Lanzavecchia, chairman of the Genesis National Dealer Advisory Council. Motor1.com contacted Genesis for confirmation of this report. “Thanks for contacting us. We can’t confirm any future product plans at this time,” a spokesperson told us.
The production version of the X Convertible Concept will be a hello to the Genesis brand. Sales volumes will be low, but the model will reveal what’s possible from a premium brand.
“I don’t know if it’s going to be over $200,000 or $300,000, but I guarantee we’ll see a lot of convertible Bentley Continental trade-ins when it comes to our showrooms,” Lanzavecchia told Automotive News.
The X Convertible uses Genesis’ Athletic Elegance design language. It features a long hood and short aft deck. Curved body lines connect these elements. The front features a pair of light strips where the lower ones reach to a point in the center of the nose to create the trademark shield-shaped grille line of previous vehicles.
For the concept, the X Convertible has a high-tech folding hard top. When not opened, there is a transparent moonroof that still makes the occupants look up at the sky.
The vehicle cab includes a driver-focused cockpit. The bezel for the digital display bends around the pilot. It has an attractive appearance but seems useless for passengers who want to touch the screen because they have to reach the pillars.
The X Convertible is the third in a series of concepts from Genesis. X and X Speedium Coupe preceded it. They are all EVs. However, the brand hasn’t gone into specifics about the powertrain yet.
Hyundai Motor Group has upgrades coming to the Electric Global Modular Platform that powers EVs from the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. Third generation silicon-carbide power module will offer greater energy efficiency, which will improve performance, range and charging time.
