There we thought Ultimae would be the last Lamborghini to have a pure V12 and Lamborghini proved us wrong with the duo Invencible and Autentica. The former was a coupe while the latter was a roadster, serving as the swan song for the twelve-cylinder engine before the coming hybrid era. Both are based on the durable Aventador platform, which premiered 12 years ago with the original LP 700-4.
The Invencible and Autentica are a mix of past models featuring styling cues derived from several V12 engines, including the Reventon. It was a limited run special edition based on the Murcielago but with an exterior look that continued the preview of the Aventador. Lamborghini says the pair also emulate the Veneno, which is arguably the wildest derivative of the Aventador. If the hood design looks familiar, that’s because it’s been borrowed from the Essenza SCV12, a track-only monster with a 6.5-liter unit that produces 818 horsepower.
Lamborghini’s swan song for the fuel-only V12 pays homage to the Gallardo-based Sesto Elemento with its focus on light weight and a stocky rear wing. The one-of-a-kind coupe and roadster features a full carbon fiber body featuring the company’s traditional hexagon theme. The Invencible finished at Rosso Efesto while Autenteica got the Grigio Titans exterior. Inside, the minimalist dashboard omits the infotainment system and features 3D printed air vents.
These unique cars use the most powerful configuration of the venerable V12 ever put into a road car by Lamborghini. As with the Ultimae, the mid-mounted naturally aspirated engine produces 769 hp and 720 Nm (531 lb-ft) of torque which is sent to the all-wheel drive system via a seven-speed ISR gearbox. Performance details haven’t been disclosed, but look for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 220 mph (355 km/h) to match the Ultimae.
Lamborghini has refrained from talking about how much money was charged for the two cars. However, logic tells us the price is well above Ultimae’s $500,000 asking price. The LP 780-4 Ultimae is limited to 350 coupes and 250 roadsters but with Invencible and Autentica being one time, Sant’Agata Bolognese must have set a huge price premium for that exclusivity.
This is really the end of the line for the Aventador. Its highly anticipated successor will appear in the first quarter of 2023 with the new V12 part of the plug-in hybrid powertrain. This will start a hybrid revolution as the Urus will get a PHEV and the Huracan replacement will be electrified as well. EVs will follow in 2028 but Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, Rouven Mohr, alerted our sister site InsideEVs that it wouldn’t be a supercar since then technology is not ready for high performance applications.
