The Alpine A290_β, the sports version of the electric Renault R5, is presented

The French firm Alpine has begun its transition to electric mobility with the presentation of the A290_β, a prototype that is revealed as a faithful preview of its first zero-emission model, which will hit the market next year. As can be seen in the images, it will not be a completely new car, since it will actually derive from the electric Renault R5.

The use of the Greek letter β (beta) indicates that its design is relatively close to that of the production model. In front of 5 prototypethe A290_β is distinguished by having a specific body kit reminiscent of the A110 sports car, the concepts Alpenglow, the classic R5 Turbo and even the A470 endurance prototype.

On the front we find additional headlights that give it a certainly retro touch; besides, the X-shaped light signature is a nod to the racing cars of yesteryear. The bumpers have side air intakes that redirect the airflow, thus improving the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Despite the presence of false air intakes in the rear wing, the body is still a five-door. The black wheel arches show that the axles are wider than in the Renault model, although its huge 20-inch wheels will not reach the street version. How could it be otherwise, a generous spoiler with integrated brake light finishes off the set.

The definitive Alpine A290 will be launched in 2024

The three-seater layout of the cabin, with the driver located in a central position, moves further away from the street model and adopts a more radical approach and closer to the world of competition. The seats with carbon fiber structure are equipped with harnesses developed by the specialist sabelt. An overhead console allows quick access to certain functions, while the head screen displays the main driving data.

With 4.05 meters long, 1.85 meters wide and 1.48 meters high, the Alpine A290 will be located in segment B (utility). Among its rivals will be the CUPRA Raval VZ, the Lancia Ypsilon HF, the MINI Cooper SE, the Opel Corsa GSe and the Volkswagen ID.2 GTI, among others.

Alpine hasn’t provided any technical details beyond confirming that it will be based on the CMF-B EV platform and will feature a multi-link rear axle (a rarity in the category). The tuning of the chassis will be specific and will have a torque vectoring system to improve its mobility. Like all other future Alpine releases, it will include one button forward which will provide additional energy for ten seconds.

Rumors indicate that it could equip the same engine of 218 PS (160 kW) that we can already find in the Renault Mégane E-TECH. Its production will take place at the Douai (France) plant, where the standard Renault R5 will also be assembled.
