The Cadillac Lyriq is the luxury marque’s first battery electric vehicle. Thus, growing pains were to be expected. In fact, reports of issues affecting the Lyriq’s 12-volt battery have surfaced over the past few days, as owners have complained on social media that the battery is running low. Cadillac Society have contacted Cadillac to find out more about the situation to provide you with more info.
The problem is believed to be caused by a failed software update that left the onboard computer “hanging”, ultimately draining the 12-volt battery. In other words, when a software update fails, the Lyriq system stays online, completely consuming the battery’s 12-volt reserve. At this time, it’s unclear whether a specific Lyriq build date could be a factor in this issue or not.
When the 12 volt battery runs out, the owner cannot access the vehicle with the key fob, or open the hood. However, Lyriq can still be accessed manually using a physical key tucked into the key fob. Owners must use this physical key to open the elevator doors using the keyhole located directly above the number plate.
“Our engineering team is working to learn more about and diagnose the issue to minimize further potential impact for Lyriq customers,” a Cadillac spokesperson told Cadillac Society in a statement. “As part of regular vehicle maintenance, Cadillac recommends Lyriq customers keep their vehicles charged to a minimum of 20 percent High Voltage state-of-charge (SOC) and connect their vehicles to a home charging unit overnight to help maintain the health of the 12V battery.”
Meanwhile, in an effort to remedy the situation, some Cadillac Lyriq owners have suggested limiting over-the-air (OTA) updates when a luxury crossover EV is installed, which can be changed in the vehicle’s settings. One owner stated that his Lyriq, which had a completely flat 12-volt battery, was revived by removing the 12-volt battery for 10 minutes before putting it back in.
