Sony’s Gran Turismo Film Begins Filming With Four Nissan GT-Rs

Sony is adapting its iconic racing video game franchise for the big screen. The film started production in late September, and new postings for Sony and Gran TurismoThe Twitter account reveals that filming has started. The film is slated to hit theaters on August 11, 2023.

Accompanying the announcement was a photo that sadly doesn’t say much about the film. It shows the clapperboard in focus with a row of at least four Nissan GT-R coupes sitting in the background, but they’re blurred and obscured from view. They appear to be wearing racing suits, as the plot of the film revolves around a young teenage video game player who becomes a professional race car driver after winning a series of Nissan competitions.

The movie sounds like Sony’s GT Academy helps Gran Turismo players translate their video game skills into the back world. The academy trains players to become professional racers, and produces real race winners. Lucas Ordóñez scored a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This film stars David Harbor, from Stranger Things fame, which will become a children’s coach. Orlando Bloom and Darren Barnet will also star in the film, directed by Neill Blomkamp. Blomkamp is best known for his sci-fi works, such as District 9, Elysiumand chappie. Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi served as executive producer. Jason Hall and Zach Baylin, from American sniper and King Richard fame, respectively, wrote the script.

Harbor said in a Collider interview this week that “there’s something profound to this film” with Blomkamp in the director’s chair, adding, “I can’t wait for you to see this film.”

It Gran Turismo The video game franchise began life in 1997 on the original Sony PlayStation video game console. The eighth installment of the franchise, Gran Turismo 7, launched earlier this year for PlayStation 4 and 5, with more than 400 cars available to players. It Gran Turismo movies are just the latest video game property to get the Hollywood treatment. studio Uncharted movie came out earlier this year, and the company is also working on a bent metal television series.
