Rebodied Mazda MX-5 With Posh Interior Marks Coachbuilder’s Anniversary

Posted on

Coachbuilder Hurtan from Spain has been rebodying cars since 1992 and is now celebrating his 30th birthdayth birthday with the luxurious Mazda MX-5. The Miata ND-based Grand Albaycín has been around in soft top and RF flavors since last year, but this new special edition adds exclusivity. Only six would be built, all with retro designs inspired by 1950s and 1960s sports cars.

Customers will be able to choose from three exterior colors (Lead Grey, Cherry Red, and Midnight Blue) and two interior colors. The images show a sporty roadster with a manually folding cloth roof and an electrically operated hardtop. Hurtan intends to sell a highly customized MX-5 roadster with a choice between a six-speed manual and an automatic with the same number of gears.

Without seeing the interior, you’d be hard-pressed to tell that it’s actually the MX-5 under its skin. It looks like a 1960s British roadster, which isn’t as dirty as it looks because the original Miata NA was shaped after British post-World War II roadsters. We think the quad exhaust tip is overkill given that the Grand Albaycín retains its naturally aspirated 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines with 132 and 184 horsepower respectively.

While the exterior represents an acquired taste, there’s no question that the cabin is far more luxurious than what you’ll find in a standard ND. It makes us wonder whether Mazda’s ill-fated premium brand Amati ever intended to give the Miata a high-end version of the beloved.

Hurtan doesn’t just modify the Miatas as they own the Author, serving as a revamped Chrysler PT Cruiser, along with a Route 44, rounded Fiat Ducato / Ram ProMaster with a retro look. Granada-based Coachbuilder also sells a Vintage, 1930s-inspired Jeep Wrangler.
