The current generation Audi A5 range has been around since 2017 and of course, is in dire need of a major overhaul. While we’ve yet to see a mid-size luxury car prototype road tested, be it any of its three body styles, the latest iteration of the two-door A5 has earned recognition from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
IIHS has announced that it has awarded the 2023 Audi A5 Coupe its highest award in terms of safety, the Top Safety Pick Plus. This is the 15th Top Safety Pick Plus award for Audi this year, making it the brand with the most number of awards.

According to the IIHS, the 2023 Audi A5 Coupe received the award because of the updated headlamps for the entire range. There are two headlight systems available for the Audi A5 Coupe line, namely LED Matrix designs and laser lights. Both systems received Acceptable and Good ratings respectively, which are prerequisites for earning the highest “Plus” distinction.
Of note, the 2022 Audi A5 Coupe Premium trim only has LED reflectors, which received a Marginal rating, disqualifying the model from receiving top honors. This system is currently unavailable for the 2023 model year.
In addition to the headlights, the 2023 Audi A5 Coupe’s standard and optional front collision prevention systems earned Superior ratings in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. This completes the requirements for the highest Top Safety Pick Plus award.
There weren’t many other updates to the recent A5 range, save for added power and all-wheel drive standard across the range. We’ll see what Audi has in store for the nameplate in the coming years, but electrification isn’t too far-fetched given the direction the company is currently headed.
