It’s been a minute since we last visited the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds. Based at the Kennedy Space Center Shuttle Landing Facility in Florida, this is the first highest-speed video of the famous runway that we’ve seen in nine months. And that’s one for the books.
What we have here is a 2006 Ford GT with a few modifications. By a little we mean almost everything, because this first-generation Ford supercar had a top speed well beyond its original limit of 200 mph. It’s actually owned by Johnny Bohmer himself, bought new in 2006 and tweaked over the years to be insanely fast while still being road-legal.
The video description for this high-speed run doesn’t offer a list of all the upgrades, but it certainly does note upgraded exhaust and boost pipes snaking around the rear to provide productive pressure to the V8 engine. A chute is also a good indicator of excessive speed, and the fully rolled cage inside further emphasizes this GT is no ordinary commuter car. In fact, Ford is noted to have air conditioning, stereo, and passenger seats. Apparently, Bohmer still uses the car for occasional errands around town.
However, this particular urge is not a milk effort. Tests were being carried out on the new ECU system, and it was going so well that Bohmer decided to try a flat running pace. With Gas Monkey Garage’s Richard Rawlings in hand (GMG listed as sponsor), Bohmer literally drove his Ford GT to the end of the runway. In the process, it clocked in at 310.8 mph according to the digital speed reading on the car’s dashboard.
It goes far beyond The current official Guinness World Record for street legal cars within a standing mile, which Bohmer also happens to hold at 283.23 mph. Mind you, it is Official Guinness notes. In 2019, another Ford GT achieved 300.4 mph in the Texas Mile event but was not certified by Guinness World Records. Bohmer says a 310 mph run was recently measured using a Racelogic VBox Performance Box Touch, four Garmin Ultra 30 cameras, and equipment from FuelTech.
It’s unclear whether Guinness World Records will see this, but if certified, Bohmer will officially have the fastest car in the world.
