Toward the end of the FCA era, the business plan called for an Alfa Romeo Giulia Coupe. The Italian brand even announced a revival of the “GTV” moniker, but that never happened. However, a two-door sports sedan version was finally realized with help from Zagato. The Italian coachbuilder did Instagram to deliver a new batch of teasers illustrating its sleek, eco-friendly machine. Coming in 2023, the special edition will get all-new bodywork.
It will be more than just a re-skinned Giulia as the “SWB” in the car’s name indicates the wheelbase will be shorter. The standard sedan that Alfa Romeo sells measures 2,820 millimeters (111 inches) between the axles. It is unclear whether Zagato’s creation will only have two front seats with a carbon fiber shell, or will adopt a 2+2 layout. We’re leaning towards the former as it looks like there’s a roll cage in the back.

Stepping over the outside of the vehicle, the company’s scudetto has a honeycomb pattern on which the Alfa Romeo logo is applied. A carbon fiber front splitter is also visible, along with Tonale-like headlights and a ventilated bonnet. The side gills on the front fender might make you think of the stunning 8C Competizione. Previous teasers hinted at a similar Kammback rear design to a 1960s Giulia TZ. Knowing Zagato’s modus operandi, don’t be surprised if there will be a double bubble roof.
Likely painted in the same Montreal Green color used for the two-seat Giulia GTA and GTAm, the high-performance coupe also borrows its twin-turbo V6 engine. One of the teasers shows the 2.9-liter engine, which produces 533 horsepower (398 kilowatts) and 600 Newton-meters (442 pound-feet) of torque. It’s too soon to say if Alfa Romeo engineers have found a way to increase output even further. Even with the engine that was brought, performance should still increase because Zagato’s creation will be lighter after shortening the body and removing the rear door.
Considering that Alfa Romeo charges €181,500 for the GTAm, expect the version Zagato wrote to be expensive. It has to be more exclusive than the GTA/GTAm 500 cars combined. With the teaser campaign intensifying, the wrap could come off as early as 2023.
This car could be the swan song for pure ICE powered Alfas as the Stellantis marque will go pure electric from 2027.
