How to find out if your license has expired
The expiry date of driving licenses differs according to the category of the license held and according to the age of the driver. For AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B and BE licenses, which have been issued or renewed since 17 September 2012, the expiry date is in the month and day of the driver’s birthday. You can check if your license has expired in three ways, here are what they are:
- Check the expiration date in item 4b of the document or on the back

- Through iPatente, the official app of the Department of Transport, available for iOS and Android

Risks and consequences of an expired license
As established by article 126 of the highway codeDriving with an expired license will result in a fine which can range from 158 to 638 euros, in addition to the fine foreseen for the withdrawal of the expired documentation.
The expired license is sent to the competent Prefect and the document is returned to the interested party only after renewal. Beyond the fine for an expired licence, which in some cases can even reach 8,186 euros, can be administrative detention ordered of the vehicle for three months.
In the case of recidivism, even the confiscation of the vehicle is foreseen. Instead, it is possible to renew a license that has expired for more than 3 years or for more than 5 years, but it is strictly forbidden to drive in the period between expiration and renewal.
