The Highway Code is very strict in regulating the transport of this object by car: very severe fines.
It can happen from time to time that you have to carry some bulky material in the car. Thanks to the folding seats we can place several boxes: an expedient that can be useful for example in the case of quick and small moves.
A different matter, however, is when you have to take home something that you have purchased and which unfortunately exceeds the length of the car. In that situation you need to equip yourself well not only to prevent the load from slipping away, but above all to avoid being stopped by the police and receiving very heavy fines.
Carry of the protruding load in fact it can be dangerous for the cars that surround us and for ourselves, for this reason it is regulated in a precise way by the Traffic Laws placing stakes on the type of load that can be transported, the measurements and everything we need to avoid breaking the rules.
How to transport the protruding load by car without risking heavy fines
Let’s start from the end: the fines foreseen for those who transport protruding loads by car without due attention and not respecting what the law says can even reach 1600 euros.
L’article 61 of the Highway Code explains that each vehicle must have a maximum width of 2 meters and 55, including load. Furthermore, the height must not exceed four meters with the relative protrusion of the load which must not exceed the limit of three tenths of the length of the car.
Of course, there are rules about how the cargo should be arranged as well. The goal is to do not obstruct forward and rear visibility, which must always be “free” from any possible obstruction.
In this regard, if the load protrudes it must of course not obstruct the license platethe beam of light emitted by the headlights and, needless to say, it must be avoided that it streaks along the asphalt.
How to fix it then? In the safest way possible and avoiding that it creates the obstacles we have talked about and signal everything with special panels and signs that are quadrangular and retroreflective.
As we have seen, the fines can become very high and vary according to the seriousness of the offence. It starts from “only” 87 eurosbut the amount of the fine can grow and exceed 340 euros first, then 400 euros and finally the ceiling of 1682 euros.
In that case, however, it would mean that not only have you not insured the load properly, but you have evidently also violated all possible rules, endangering yourself and the other cars in the vicinity. Always pay close attention when carrying out transport of this kind because the consequences can also be serious.
