The move that is absolutely prohibited by the Highway Code is to throw handkerchiefs, waste, cigarette butts and more out of the window. And this is true both if the car is stationary and if it is running. Obviously, throwing something out the window with the car in motion greatly increases the danger to other motorists circulating at that precise moment. But what fine can you incur if you are “caught” making this move?
In addition to the danger of the gesture, throwing garbage, litter or anything else from the window of your car is something that shows great incivility in those who perform such gestures. Respecting the environment is the move we always recommend in every area and situation.
Article 15 of the Highway Code expressly forbids “deposit waste or materials of any kind, dirty and soil the road and its appurtenances” and of “dirty the road or its appurtenances by throwing rubbish or objects from parked or moving vehicles”.
Therefore, throwing any object from stationary or running vehicles is expressly prohibited by road regulations. It is not just an act of incivility, but a real traffic offence.
