The third-generation Subaru Crosstrek is already on sale in Japan, where it’s the 2023 model. Soon, the compact crossover will grace the North American stage as the 2024 model. Mark February 9th on your calendar, because that’s when the US-spec Crosstrek officially makes its debut. It will be showcased at the 2023 Chicago Auto Show.
When the cover was lifted, there was no reason to believe that it would be very different from the version that debuted in Japan last year. Crosstrek owners will easily recognize this new model, especially in the profile where the styling changes are minimal. Thick wheel arches with chunky plastic trim add to the rugged design language that Subaru has injected into the new Crosstrek. It continues with a complex rear fascia featuring edgy, irregular shapes and more plastic trim. At the front, a much larger grille sits over a new fascia with larger drive lights. The dimensions are nearly identical, with the next-gen model being roughly half an inch longer.
Inside, the Crosstrek received a central 11.6-inch touchscreen. It’s much larger compared to the outgoing model, and the screen is mounted in a portrait orientation that extends from the dash from top to bottom. However, digital upgrades don’t mean a lack of tactile control. There are still plenty of buttons to control the stereo, climate function, seat position, and a large stalk shift hold station on the center console.
While we do not expect urgent difference for the US version, some changes may occur. Among other things, Subaru’s teaser photo for US Crosstrek (below) shows sport badges on the doors instead of the e-Boxer emblem. Subaru currently doesn’t have a sports trim for the Crosstrek in its home market, and otherwise, it’s unclear whether North America will get the e-Boxer hybrid powertrain. In Japan, it was a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four engine producing 145 horsepower, paired with a small 13 horsepower electric motor. Front-wheel drive is also available on the Japanese Crosstrek.
The larger machine with standard-issue all-wheel drive may be a better fit for the North American market, but we’ll have to wait until February 9 to know for sure. Crosstrek 2024 debuts in a live stream event for the Chicago Auto Show, and we’ll get all the details right here at Motor1.com.
