The obligation applies to novice drivers, i.e. anyone who has not yet turned 21 or who has had a driving license for less than three years. In practice, who belongs to this category he will not be able to carry more than one passenger on board his car between midnight and five in the morning.

Anyone who should be stopped with more than one passenger on board will take a risk heavy penalties. They will be between 800 euros and 3,200 euros. Furthermore, in the most serious cases, arrest for up to six months and the suspension of the license from six months to one year may be triggered.

This measure is called “Edward Amendment” and refers to the name of a 17-year-old boy who died in a car accident in early 2022. The measure was designed to limit road accident deaths among young people at night.
