Motorhomes provide travelers with a home on the road. But what if you had a more rustic personal aesthetic? Take a look at this Volkswagen Beetle “Holzhaus”, which roughly translates to log cabin or chalet. The odd rig is currently on sale in Italy.
This wooden cabin on wheels began as the 1970 VW Beetle 1302 (this model was the Super Beetle in the United States. A group of Alpine craftsmen added a wooden body over the original chassis in 1995. They even carved the wood by hand for the interior and exterior, according to the listing.

The bonnet and bonnet have murals showing a mountainous landscape with a waterfall, and there are wheel covers to match. The bumper and windshield wipers have curved wood trim.
The wooden body takes inspiration from an Alpine chalet. Wooden shutters were on the rear windows on each side, and gingham curtains were inside. One could even put flooring in window sill planters. A bronze eagle poses on the roof, and there’s even a chimney.
The interior also looks like a country cabin. The dashboard has a mural of mountains. Paintings are also on every door panel. The three sided benches are at the back, and there is a round table in the middle. The chimney worked because there was a small fireplace in one corner.
The owner uses this particular Beetle during Alpine Club demonstrations, parties and festivals. It served as a mobile bar and ticket office at VW demonstrations.
Sellers noted that the 1.6 liter flat four-cylinder air-cooled engine “ran very well”. The car requires a technical inspection.
Sellers in Italy are willing to ship cars to Europe or the rest of the world. This 1970 model is past 25 years of import regulations in the United States, so one could even take it there.
Sales listings show the car was featured in various magazines and newspapers over the years.
