Brian Malczewski is the principal exterior designer at General Motors, and his recent work includes making the appearance of GMC Hummer pickups and SUVs. He and General Motors Design’s Instagram page have just posted an interesting rendering from 2018 showing a Chevy-branded sports coupe with a distinct resemblance to the Camaro.
Malczewski wrote: “Fun sketch from 2018…wonder what it was for.”
It’s hard not to see the Camaro-style influence on this image due to the long nose, wide fenders, small passenger compartment and short rear deck. However, the current sixth-generation model is here for the 2016 model year, which means it’s not a sketch for the new Camaro. However, GM Design and Malczewski’s post doesn’t say exactly what this rendering envisions.
Malczewski also worked on the sixth generation Camaro. He posted the rendering below on his Instagram page. Other than the exaggerated fender sizes, they look very similar to the production model.
Camaro is now on the verge of retirement as the 2024 model year is the last for the current generation. Vehicle assembly ends in January 2024.
The Collector’s Edition Camaro is the automaker’s farewell to the sixth-generation model. It is available for LT/RS, LT1, SS, and ZL1 trims. Depending on the class, they can have elements such as Panther Black paint, a revised body kit and a panther on the steering wheel.
The ZL1 Collector’s Edition is limited to just 350 units. It gets a matte version of the Panther Black paint. Customers also get a Shinola Canfield Sport watch with a serial number that matches the one on the steering wheel.
The future of the Camaro is still uncertain. When the company announced the end of the current generation, Chevrolet Global Vice President Scott Bell said: “While we didn’t announce a direct successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of the Camaro story.”
That statement signifies the name Camaro is not dead. Although, there are no official details on how it might come back.
