Genesis GV60 2023 Gets World’s First Facial Recognition Keyless Entry

The Genesis GV60 is the luxury brand’s first dedicated electric vehicle. We had the opportunity to test it in September this year and were pleasantly surprised by its performance, stunning interior and fast charging technology. For the 2023 model year in European markets, the electric crossover received a technological upgrade in the form of new biometric features, including the world’s first facial recognition technology for keyless entry engines in production vehicles.

A function called Face Connect gives customers the ability to unlock and access their car using their face thanks to facial recognition sensors with deep learning image processing controllers. You only need to access the car with the physical key once and set up your profile for facial recognition – all future locking, unlocking and starting of the engine can be done completely without the need for a physical key.

For some, this technology may sound too intimidating and confusing. However, Genesis says the system is easy to use and there is an LED indicator on the B-pillar, which visualizes the car’s status and provides confirmation each time the system is activated. The automaker also ensures that no biometric data is ever uploaded and stored remotely outside the car’s HMI.

If this technology sounds familiar to you – that’s probably because a very similar feature is now very popular on smartphones and is used by millions of users around the world every day. Genesis believes its implementation into the GV60 is ideal for outdoor activities such as swimming, climbing and running, where it is inconvenient to carry a physical key.

But for now, it seems that this technology will only be available in the 2023 GV60 for the European market. The South Korean brand says the electric luxury crossover is already available for order in select markets across the continent, including the UK where the GV60 is sold in the Premium, Sport and Sport Plus classes. Meanwhile, in the United States, the EV crossover is available in two versions – the entry-level GV60 Advance with standard AWD and 248 miles of range and the top-range GV60 Performance with 429 hp.
