We would all like not to pay the car tax: this tax based solely on car ownership, regardless of its use, is certainly among the most hated by Italians, perhaps on a par only with the RAI license fee.

To manage the collection of the car tax in Italy are directly the regions with collection methods that vary from area to area. The Revenue Agency, for example, takes care of it personally both in Sardinia and in Friuli Venezia Giulia. For everything else there is instead one direct management by the regional public administration bodies.

There is no escaping the payment of the car tax: as we said at the beginning, it is one mandatory fee for anyone who owns a vehicle and regardless of its use or not unlike insurance. In fact, if you know you won’t use a car or motorbike for 6 months, you are free to choose whether to disconnect the insurance coverage. However, the same does not happen in the case of car tax: it is a tax that is always due. But there are exceptions.

How to get a car tax exemption

The car tax is due in all cases, but there are situations that allow you to get away with it definitively or to obtain an exemption for a period. The first case is that of vintage cars that are used only for historical exhibitions and so on; the second concerns, as you imagine, the machines of the latest generation with electric and hybrid engines and in general with low emissions.

18 Italian regions provide for the total exemption from paying the car tax for all electric cars for even 5 years. Specifically, we are talking about Liguria, Marche, Abruzzo, Veneto, Tuscany, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Trentino Alto-Adige, Valle d’Aosta, Friuli, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Sardinia and Sicily.

The only differences are in the Piedmontin which electric car owners are exempt from paying road tax, but also for anyone owning a Euro 6 and hybrid-powered car.

There Lombardy provides for the exemption on hydrogen cars, complete with a contribution of 90 euros for anyone wishing to scrap an old polluting car. The purchase of a car for 5 or 7 euros, whether petrol or hybrid, allows you to have an exemption for up to 3 years.

And then there is the 50% reduction of the road tax for 5 years for anyone who owns a hybrid car, provided however that it was registered on January 1, 2019 and without taking advantage of the scrapping.
